Ode to Fat Camp

I loved Stephanie Klein's memoir Straight Up and Dirty. Now, following in the footsteps of Jen Lancaster (though they are not so much friends as supercompetitors) Klein has written her memoir of being overweight in Moose. Although... Jen's is more about life as a somewhat overweight adult and Klein's is about being overweight in childhood (Hello! Check out the video she is super thin now).

Anyway from the looks of this "book trailer" I'm going to love reading this book (Book trailer! Who knew?):

P.S. I finished Such a Pretty Fat! Review coming soon. Next up: I Was Told There'd Be Cake by Sloane Crosley

Sex and the City the Movie

I have waited in anticipation for months--no, years--to see Sex and the City: The Movie.

The Verdict?
As Carrie says about Berger's book: "I love love love love loved it. I looooooved it!"

Honestly? It was two and a half hours of pure movie/TV bliss.

It wasn't perfect--there were definitely moments I wasn't such a fan of (hello Mexico trip! Why?), characters I wanted to see more of (I missed Harry and Anthony and Steve--they all made appearances but had very minimal presence) and maybe too much of Carrie and Samantha (Charlotte's role was underdeveloped and Miranda was such a jerk for the first half!).

BUT

I still love love love loved it! I looooooved it!

Even though it seemed pretty dark about halfway through, it ended up happy in the end--thank God. I found myself tearing up, smiling broadly, laughing, thinking, and especially cracking up at the woman a few rows in front of us who was very loudly enjoying the show. It was fantastic.

Read Slate's Review

Will I see it again? Abso-fuckin-lutely.

It's Finally Here!

The night I've been waiting for is almost here:
Tomorrow night we're going to see Sex and the City the Movie!

Review to follow ASAP!

Top Chef: He Butchered It!

Like the reviewer on Televisionary.com, when watching last night's episode of Top Chef I was totally scared one of my favorites (Stephanie, Antonia & Richard) wouldn't make it to the final. Especially when Spike flew through that butchering Quick Fire Challenge. However, after the segment of the show where they show the, you know, actual food, I felt pretty safe.

How could Spike have actually chosen those frozen scallops? I feel like frozen anything is a no-no on this show. When he was paper-toweling them off for the umpteenth time, I had a feeling it might be him going home.

And Lisa didn't sail through this episode either--I think her crazy peanut butter mashed potatoes might have saved her. They love innovation on this show and hey, I love to watch it.

But when did Lisa become a sort of villain? Yeah she never really got along well with anyone, but she seems to have become much more disagreeable and much more outspoken against the other contestants lately. Weird.

Anyway, when Padma told Spike to pack his knives and go, I let out a little sigh of relief and got pretty excited--this means three out of the final four are female! There is a super good chance that this season's Top Chef could be a woman. It's about time!

UPDATE: TVSquad.com reports on Scallop-gate 2008. They were planted by Top Chef!

Last Issue of The Paper?

I finally watched the last two episodes of MTV's The Paper today. I can't believe the season is already over, and neither can Entertainment Weekly. I feel like it just began and Homecoming just happened! Seriously!

I'm still trying to decide if I should have my students watch it next year or just leave it for a special occasion, but I'm thinking more the latter since most of it seems to be more about drama than actual newspaper production. However, the last two episodes were very deadline- and issue-centered which was nice to see. I also loved how the teambuilding outing brought the staff together (even though it was minus one editor-in-chief) and how the staff fought the attempted assistant principal censorship!

Overall I enjoyed Season 1 of The Paper and am hoping there will be another season... maybe this time it will star girl Alix? Or maybe they'll ditch newspaper and get a crazy group of yearbookies together for some more quality reality TV! You can bet I'll be watching.

Random 5

1. My mom is way into The Office lately. Hilarious. She was cracking up watching reruns last night on TBS and now she actually requested to watch a few episodes on DVD tonight. I'm glad she finally appreciates this show! We'll have to watch this season (at least the season finale, which was hysterical) on NBC.com.

2. I'm almost through with Such a Pretty Fat by Jen Lancaster. A rave review will follow my completion. The great thing about subbing is using plan period to read! Too bad I can't do that next year. I'll have to actually... plan. Right.

3. Somehow I got hooked on Keeping Up With the Kardashians. I blame E! marathons and a Memorial Day with nothing else on TV. First it was just mildly ridiculous. Then I kinda sorta started to get into it. Now I find myself scouring the program guide looking for the next time it's on (not until Saturday--ah!). Sad but true. Especially since the entire family has the same voice. Weirds me out but I can't stop watching.

4. This Chicago Tribune article about censorship in high schools is super disturbing, especially since I am just beginning my career as a yearbook/newspaper adviser and my students keep telling me how they want to go "deeper" with their stories next year. Let's hope I can keep my job!

5. Yeah, I said I probably would and I am. I'm watching the second audition night for So You Think You Can Dance. The summer hasn't even begun and I'm already desperate for something to watch on TV. Yikes.

5.27.2008

Yet Another Video... Sorry

I know I've been posting a LOT of videos lately, but this one is AWESOME!

Weezer's new video for their song "Pork and Beans" is great--full of web "celebrities" and reminiscent of South Park's episode with the YouTube Celebrity Showdown.

And everyone is talking about it--People.com, Best Week Ever, Perez Hilton, etc. etc.

Plus I couldn't get the song out of my head during my first day of subbing today!

So You Think You Can Dance Audition Night 1

I've never watched So You Think You Can Dance (apart from snippets of reruns on MTV) but after watching a little bit of Dateline, being bored by the Bachelorette and already watching several home shows earlier tonight, I determined there was absolutely nothing on TV except this and figured why not try it out?

Overall, it wasn't anything too exciting. There was a cute Asian couple who really danced well, a soon-to-be-Sorority-girl who bounced around and apparently brought "joy" to the room and one creepy guy who did a sort of robot act the judges couldn't get enough of. I felt like I was watching a street performer. Which, incidentally, he is!

Now, granted, I really have no room to talk because I couldn't dance my way out of a paper bag, but still!

Here's a clip of the creepy guy. I'd say I won't watch the show again, but now that most of my shows have concluded for the summer, I may not have a choice.

No One Mourns the WICKED!

Except me, that is. I am already in mourning because it's over!

Today was WICKED at the Music Hall and it was even better than I remembered. I was afraid the old building would provide for nasty acoustics and/or sound system but thankfully it was a-MAY-zing! Glinda was actually pretty hilarious (although strangely Mary-Katherine-Gallagher-inspired) and Elphaba was outstanding.

I also found out in my exploration of the program that the guy who played Fiyero is married to the girl who played Nessa Rose and they met when playing Chris and Kim in Miss Saigon--and I totally saw them in that! Plus she is DeeDee from the New Mickey Mouse Club so even cooler.

Overall it was wonderful except I cried during "For Good" thinking of my friends... of course. Now I am just depressed it is over! I hate when something you look forward to for a really long time comes and is then over. I bought those tickets at the beginning of February! Oh well at least it was a great afternoon of amazing entertainment. I can't wait to see it again!

Here's a clip from the cast that I saw:

A Peek at Weeds

Weeds season 4 premieres in June and I can't wait. Good thing I have Showtime again! It will be very interesting to see how Nancy and the Botwin clan do outside of Agrestic/Majestic and their "little boxes." Get excited!

This Show is BACK!

I saw this on Give Me My Remote and couldn't put it better myself:

Dear Grey's Anatomy,

Thank you. I’m whole and healthy and I’m going to try to trust you. I don’t know if I can, but I’m going to try. I’m not sure if I have a room where our kids can play but after what you’ve showed in these post-strike episodes, there’s definitely room on my TiVo for you. It’s episodes like that when I feel lucky that I’m a chick, and therefore have no issues with all the crying, and the giddy feelings I had with all the kissing. You righted some wrongs. We all went through some therapy. Stick with it next season - it’s not easy but you kept one patient alive. Don’t screw up again.

Love, EVERYONE

***
I just got done watching the two-hour season finale of Grey's Anatomy (DVR'ed from last night when I was busy moving back to KC) and only two words come to mind.

One: WOW.

Two: Kissing! Good lord was there some smooching going on during this episode! But also Good Lord was it about time! Cally and Erica--whoa. Dr. Webber and his wife--sorta unnecessary. Izzy and Alex--oh nooooo! George and Lexi--uh what? And finally, Der and Mer--it's about damn time!

People seem genuinely happy on the show. And it's still good. See Grey's writers? People don't have to be miserable to get ratings. These post-strike episodes are the best I've seen in several seasons. Keep up the great work and maybe, just maybe, people will start to REALLY LOVE this show again.

Just Call me Waterworks

Today was my last day in Des Moines and at Drake ever.

It was also my last day with my friends for a very long time, at least for one of them.

I have cried my eyes out over the past week and today wasn't any different.

I'm home now in KC for good and I am pumped for my new place and my new job and everything but man, today is a sad, sad day. I am going to miss my friends so very much.

Today was an adventure fitting with the past two years: we head out to lunch and get in a fender bender, chatting with a crazy sales guy in the rain for an hour while our stomachs growl. I put off saying good-bye to people as long as I could and then I lost it.

These tears have to dry up soon, right?

This song isn't helping matters. It's beautiful and I love Regina Spektor but it reminds me of my friends and the words are saaaaaaaaaaad:

And The Winner is David...?

COOK!

I totally TOTALLY thought David Archuleta was gonna take the title, even though I so wanted David Cook to win.

Apparently so did like 50 million other people. Literally. Here's BuzzSugar's recap of the night.

Congrats David Cook! And how funny was the way Ryan Seacrest announced the winner? Talk about suspense... down to the last name:

I just hope being American Idol doesn't slow his career down and they don't force him to put out a cookie cutter poppy album. Leave that to Archuleta.

UPDATE: Kansas City is ridiculously pumped to have the American Idol! His face and congratulations are all over the electronic billboards and every other radio promo is about him. My mom bought tickets to go see the Idol Tour--that is going to be one crazy concert with all the KC fans in the Sprint Center!

Disheartening News

In my continuation of trying to catch up on the 1000+ blogs I had sitting in my reader from day of neglect, I came across these two articles:

Reluctantly, a Daily Stops Its Presses, Living Online

and

Yearbooks Vanish from Houston Schools in Facebook Era

Both are pretty disheartening when I am about to embark upon a career teaching students about journalism and encouraging them to pursue it as a career. According to these articles, not only are student publications becoming obsolete, but also regular newspapers. These topics hasve been big in discussion lately and I try to remain positive amidst so much negativity!

I guess I just need to come up with ways to appeal to the Facebook generation and combine the two mediums together. I can't wait to start working with my students and talking to other teachers about ideas!

Graduation Secrets

Needless to say this was a busy weekend so I got a bit backed up on the blog reading.

Here are my favorites from the graduation-themed Post Secret edition yesterday:

5.18.2008

That's Master Hughes To You

Okay yeah, Master Hughes sounds super weird but Michelle said it and it made me laugh. I have my Masters! How crazy is that? I am graduated!

Here's the crew in our caps and gowns. Honestly, how ridiculous does skinny David look in that giant robe?

It was a sad day because I had to say good-bye to Chaddio (tears before the ceremony are never a good idea!) but overall it went well. We had a yummy brunch at Gateway, met up with the guys for pictures before the ceremony, listened to Woodward go on and on about the value of the printed book, and the hall got closed.

5.17.2008

The Beginning of the End

This morning was our last breakfast/meal together. It was rough to pull it off amidst floods in Herriott but we did it.

Not a great picture (I look weird) but it works:

So SAD! It's the beginning of the end. Today the families come, the stuff gets moved out and the graduation celebrations begin.

I'll be the one crying in the corner. Somehow all these good-byes are turning me into a crybaby lately. Gah.

Tonight: Dinner with the family, over to David's party and out with Michelle and Andy hopefully. Tomorrow: Graduation!

Prince Caspian Reviewed

The boys couldn't wait to see the next installment in the Chronicles of Narnia movie series and so we went on opening day.

I enjoyed Prince Caspian a lot, although I will agree with BuzzSugar that is was heavy on the battlescenes... and the characters weren't really developed very well. Luckily, they were in the first one so we could sit back and enjoy how pretty Peter is! Susan's lips bothered me, though, and one big complaint: Edmund was far too agreeable! He must have really grown up in that year!

Anyway probably my favorite part was the Regina Spektor song "The Call" at the end. LOVED IT!

This was a sad movie to see, though, as it marked the last movie the four of us will see together... at least for a long time. It was a good one to end on.

And Then There Were Three

We're down to the final three on American Idol. Despite a busy schedule during Finals Week, we managed to make time to catch the show last night.

Here's the EW/PopWatch rundown of the night.

My money's on Archuleta and Cook. A David vs. David showdown.

Syesha will be fine, end up on Broadway somewhere most likely. I want to see the Davids throw down next week!

UPDATE: Syesha's out and it's on between the Davids! Next week should be fantastic!

Brothers and Sisters Season Finale

How great was the season finale of Brothers and Sisters? I watched it like three times at least cause it made me smile so much. I love that Scotty and Kevin tied the knot in such a lovely ceremony and that they didn't even mind when Nora took over and made it into a wedding. It was realistic, touching and a great finale.

Suggestions for next season:
1. Bring in a love interest for Saul! Yes!
2. Get rid of the annoying baby storyline for Kitty and Robert--or at least go somewhere with it. Bor-ing!
3. Let Justin and Rebecca be happy at least for a little bit before throwing some drama in there.

Can't wait for Season 3!

5.12.2008

Got GUTS?

According to TV Squad, Nickelodeon is bringing back GUTS!

As a nineties kid, I am rejoicing. I remember watching that show and thinking about how I could prove myself if I had the chance in front of Mike O'Malley and millions of viewers (okay maybe more like thousands of viewers). And who didn't love the Agro-Crag?

One thing though--as much fun as it is to revive old shows, it makes me think. Have we really run out of ideas so much that we have to bring back a crazy competition where kids run through sparklers and foam pits in colorful helmets?

5.11.2008

Happy Mother's Day

Unfortunately I can't be with my mom today, but in a few short days I will be moving back to KC for good and I'll get to see her every day. I can't wait!

This secret from PostSecret today sums it up perfectly (sorry friends, I love ya, but...):

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there and the best one of all: mine!

Saturday Extravaganza!

Apparently there IS stuff to do in Des Moines. And we pretty much did it all today.

Stop 1: Free Tour of the Capitol
We went on a free tour of the Iowa Capitol building. Our guide was a little goofy, and there were a LOT of stairs, but overall it was very cool and we were all glad we went.

5 Important Things I learned from the Tour:
1. Iowans are behind the times. They have never had a female governor, US representative or US Senator. LAME!
2. Iowans keep their first ladies locked in a glass case--and they all conveniently have the same face.
3. Schools and liability have changed drastically. When the capitol building was on fire, the governor ordered 250 kids from East High School to go into the burning building to rescue furniture, books, money from safes, etc. "Okay kids, run INTO the burning building!"
4. Iowans were super cheap. They stayed in a building that looked nothing like a capitol building for 26 years--a building that was literally falling down on the legislative branch.
5. Ugly carpet will never go out of style, apparently.

Stop 2: Farmer's Market
It was the opening Saturday for the Farmer's Market so we walked around and checked things out. Definitely better when there are actual crops and food and stuff there. But still fun.

Stop 3: Lunch at Legends Downtown
Had a yummy turkey melt and people-watched out the window. Our waiter was extremely slow.

Stop 4: Amici Downtown
David and I did a little homework/reading while Chad and Tony hunted for mushrooms at Saylorville Lake. Talked to our favorite barista, Rachael.

Stop 5: Spike's for Dinner
Nothing special but it was a stop

Stop 6: Tony's Apartment
Played Mario Kart for Wii (I did not enjoy it as much as Mario Kart for GameCube) and ate some mushrooms.

Stop 7: Wal-Mart
Picked up some items for RA appreciation gifts and kinda walked around to kill time before stop 8.

Stop 8: Speed Racer at Cobblestone
Waaayyyyyy better than I could have imagined, especially after reading terrible review after terrible review. Yeah, parts of it were a little reminiscent of fuscia vomit but there was a plot, the actors were fun and the racetracks were just like ones on MarioKart! Plus a HYSTERICAL monkey. I told Chad that's what I want for graduation. Complete attainable, I know. Anyway, I totally got kidnapped and forced to go to this movie (I won't mention what the punishment was gonna be unless I said yes) but I actually enjoyed it. And I didn't even doze off!

We were busy from 10:00am until after midnight. Talk about a great day in DSM!

Amnesia is So Hot Right Now

I just finished Sophie Kinsella's latest novel, Remember Me? As I was reading about a woman waking up from a coma and not remembering her life, conveniently inflicted with partial retrograde amnesia, I thought to myself, "haven't I heard this one before?" Right. It's basically the premise for Samantha Who? (one of my favorite new TV shows this season). The show and book are so uncannily similar that both titles even end in a question mark. Scary, I know.

The close resemblance of the book to the show really didn't take anything away from Remember Me? but it did leave me with one big conclusion: amnesia is so hot right now. I swear I can't throw a remote around without bumping into someone in a coma who wakes up and can't remember anything about themselves, whether it's a medical drama or rerun of While You Were Sleeping.

For some reason, audiences seem captivated by the idea of someone who forgets everything about her life and gets to "start over" and change who she was. Maybe it's a fantasy that everyone has--at least everyone who carries around any guilt or regret (so, yeah, basically everyone). I enjoy it but I'm not sure it's because I wish I could get a hard bump on the head (darn those car accidents!) and wake up with no memory of anything bad I've ever done.

Plus if I could have Todd from Samantha Who? or Jon from Remember Me? waiting anxiously for me to wake up, that would be just lovely.

Primary Results Not So Hot for Hil

Is it the end for Hillary Clinton? God, I hope not.

Last night, she took the Indiana primary... but only by this much. Barack Obama won a landslide victory in North Carolina. Most people were saying Hillary needed two victories last night.

This morning on the Today Show, Tim Russert was shooting his mouth off, repeating his statement from last night and saying that every objective Democrat believes that Barack Obama has now won the nomination and that there is no way Hillary can come back.

CNN Analysis

Is this true? Could it really be the end for Hillary Clinton? Sad day.

The Paper Redeems Itself

Just when I thought you couldn't get any dumber... you go and do something like this.
AND TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF! (A little Dumb and Dumber for ya)

I almost didn't watch The Paper this week because of the nightmare I had after watching last week's episode. As a soon-to-be publications adviser, GOD this show makes me nervous.

BUT I sucked it up, turned it on last night, and am totally glad I did! Because guess what? This episode was actually about the school paper! Shocking, I know.

It was the first deadline and, yes, there was still drama, but it was actually newspaper drama and not Dave Matthews, beer pong, gossip at the pizza place drama. This episode I could actually imagine showing my class.

Especially my editor in chief. At least from the way MTV edited things, Amanda didn't do much for this first issue. Alex totally stepped up and took over. Why, when there is such a power struggle, she would hand over the reins is beyond me. Maybe there was more to the story that got edited out, but it was a good example of not-so-good editorial leadership.

AND OH MY GOD! 36 pages? In a student newspaper? In my dreams--no wait, maybe in my nightmares. I can't even imagine. But I guess with a staff of 50, it's not such a big deal.

So, thank you, MTV, for giving us a real episode that somewhat resembled actual high school journalism. Unfortunately, from the look of the teaser scenes, next week might be right back where we started. At least no nightmares this week!

Quickie Review: Earthly Pleasures

Somehow I have found time to read lately, and I blew through this one. Earthly Pleasures by Karen Neches started off great. The premise is very creative and original: Skye works as a "greeter" in the welcoming center of Heaven. She provides orientation for people who have just died and the entire description of heaven is pretty amazing--people can type anything into their "Wishberry" and it materializes immediately! God is a woman who works in the HP Sector (Higher Power) and they watch people still alive on a reality show called "Earthly Pleasures."

Fun so far, right?

Well, about halfway through, the story turns away from heaven to a pretty ridiculous romance complete with mistaken identities, a crazy old woman (there may have been more than one), multiple comas, and a former celebrity playboy-turned-nice guy.
I really wish a) the second half of the book would've incorporated more of heaven or b) the book would've ended halfway through. Overall, an easy read and the first half is definitely enjoyable, but it was hard to really like it by the end.
Oh and I'm pretty sure anyone very religious wouldn't really like it. What I liked about heaven and God being different may not fly with others. Proceed with Caution, Christians!

I AM IRON MAN

Against my will, I went with Chad, David and Tony to the 10:40pm showing of Iron Man last night. The 10:40pm part was against my will, not the movie.

You see, try as I might, I couldn't stay awake in this movie. Again, that had nothing to do with the movie itself. I was just so darn tired from waking up at 6am every day last week and staying up too late almost every night that I found myself doing the embarassing head jerk too many times as I nodded off.

I felt terrible because guess what? This movie is actually REALLY good. Even missing out on a minute here or there, I kept up with the exciting plot and enjoyed all the special effects. Robert Downey, Jr. was awesome as Iron Man--is it weird, though, that every time I see him I think of Heart & Souls?--but I thought Gwyneth Paltrow was too skinny and kinda weird as redhead Pepper. The opening sequence was awesome and the end very conveniently (but not annoyingly) set up a sequel with four little words at a press conference: "I am Iron Man!"

TOO AWESOME.

I can't wait to watch this movie again when I am totally awake!

Update: This movie freaking made more than $100 million in its opening weekend. WOW! It was good but that is one of the top 10 openings EVER. It never ceases to amaze me how crazy people go for comic book movies. Oh and that sequel? Already has a release date, somehow.

Here's EOnline's report of the weekend box office breakdown.

5.02.2008

She's Baaaaaaaaack!

Okay Dr. Addison Montgomery might not be BACK-back but she was totally back on Grey's Anatomy last night. This was the best episode I have seen this season, hands down. I love that they used Addison's return to poke fun at the craziness that has happened this season--divorces, affairs, break-ups, Dr. Hahn totally shutting out Christina, etc.

All those Seattle Grace wusses totally needed Addison to come back and kick 'em into gear with a major reality check.

BUT this episode made me pretty sad since, after all, Addison isn't back. She's on another marginally okay show with a hot receptionist and the always lovely Taye Diggs. In LA. Whatever.

As TVSquad so cleverly pointed out, this return wouldn't have happened at all if it hadn't been for the Writer's Strike... at least one good thing came from it! I loved her response to both Callie and Hahn's weird friendship (although Callie's response to that response was totally lame) and Meredith and Derek's break up (do we see a reconciliation in the near future?).

Great episode. If things can continue like this, I may just become a huge fan of this show again. Either way, it's not like I'll stop watching it. I'm just ridiculous like that.

Wednesday Run-Down

Teenage Pothead Idol Voters, I LOATHE YOU
Once again, America, you made the wrong decision last night on Idol. I'm not the hugest Brooke fan, but truly and honestly, Jason was HORRIBLE on Tuesday night. He doesn't even seem to want to be there, and I read something on some blog today (lost the link) that he is "ready to go home." We are ready for you to go home, too, Jason. You are NOT a good singer and should NOT be in the top 4. Utterly unbelievable. Who is his fan base anyway? I don't get it. This has by far been the most outrageous singer. I'm starting to miss Kristy Lee Cook. At least she could carry a tune on occasion.

Little Tykes Kitchen Set
How much fun was last night's episode of Top Chef? I loved having the kids as sous chefs--they lightened things up and brought some much-needed humor to the show. This season has been full of good cooking but not so much with the drama. Which is good for the competition, bad for entertainment. However, how many freaking twists can Padma throw in? First only 15 minutes for the quickfire challenge, then only $10 for a budget, then kid chefs? Next they'll have to tie one hand behind their backs or not be able to talk to their team or have to use one fish to feed a thousand... er, right. SNL's parody a few weeks ago isn't too far off! I'm excited for the wedding episode next week, although I wish it was a super cute gay couple again.

Goodbye, My Almost Lover
While working on my portfolio, I have been listening to A Fine Frenzy pretty much non-stop. It invades my thoughts and even my dreams--I can't stop singing it in my head.

Bookworm Update
Earthy Pleasures--finished! Review coming soon...
Next up: Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella

My Portfolio--oh, oh, oh-oh!
5 standards done out of 10! Woohoo! Halfway there!
